Empowerment?

Last month we hosted a Sistahs Call To Action breakfast and had one very influential lady break down the meaning of "empowerment" to us.
It seems as if the word has lost it's saltiness, if you will. We slap it on organizations, blogs, websites, programs, etc. claiming to motivate and enrich one another.
The SOMSistahs have since ceased using the word itself, however, NOT the meaning, which I will give you now:
EMPOWER - transitive verb - \im-ˈpau̇(-ə)r\:
1. to give official authority or legal power to.
2. enable. 3. to promote the self-actualization (to realize fully one's potential) or influence of.
Have we been truly empowering one another? Has someone been genuinely empowering you? What does "empowerment" mean to you? What are some examples of "empowerment" in action as the transitive verb it is?
